The North-East region of India has always been one of the most elusive in terms of motorcycle adventure rides. Comprising of ‘The Seven Sister States’ of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, there is so much on offer here for adventure motorcyclists like us.
Covering an area of 255,511 square kilometres, this region has a halo effect on local as well as international motorcycle riders. It’s remoteness, wilderness and lack of mainstream motorcycling mentions is what draws riders to it.
At Red Panda Adventures, we have chalked out a whole bunch of rides in this part of India for riders of all skill levels and aspirations. We have something for the most hard-core adventure seeker who wants to fall off the grid completely or for those who want to explore the region and experience its cultural and heritage offerings.
Red Panda Adventures is one of the few established and well-known motorcycle tour operators in this region, catering to local as well as international riders. We have a very local team and know this region well, allowing us to serve you and organize our rides with the utmost care and planning.

Riding in the North East is a lot of fun and promises adventure around every bend. Formed over millions of years, the Himalayas and it’s foothills command and deserve respect. We try our best to inform our clients of all the possible challenges they might face and also of all the key highlights and attractions along the way. However, the ultimate responsibility of safety lies with the riders. This trip is ideal for someone who has just started riding. The terrain, culture and the first few days may get a bit overwhelming at times, but stay with it to experience the rewards of adventure. We want you to soak in all the wonders this ride has to offer. So the schedule allows for many stops along the way for photographs and chit chat. There are a multitude of ‘chai’ stops along the way but we aim to start and finish the ride each day while the sun is up. The accommodation and food we provide is considered to be top of the line for this part of the world but we do expect our clients to set their expectations accordingly. Luxury in this part of the world is relative to the terrain and needs a bit of adjusting.
Meet and greet with all adventurers at the airport and shuttle to the hotel. Brief cultural introduction to the North East States and our trip. Adventure starts with experimenting local gastronomic delights.
Guwahati to Kaziranga is a 200 kms / 4 hrs ride. We will be riding in the mighty Bhramhaputra river valley. It’s a relaxed ride in the plains. Soak in the winter sun and famous tea gardens of Assam. It’s a good opportunity to get accustomed to the motorcycle and Indian traffic. Kaziranga is world heritage site. It is home to 2/3 of the great Qne-horned Rhinoceroses. Its also dominated by large elephant herds and tigers.
Kaziranga is world heritage site. It’s been a protected national forest for over a century now. The forest is home to 2/3 of the great One-horned Rhinoceroses. It’s also dominated by large elephant herds and tigers. Locals are fiercely protective of this heritage and are known to bump off poachers to protect the animals living there. We will do an elephant safari/Jeep safari. Step out of your rooms with a prayer to Nature, so you can lock eyes with a Rhino or even a Tiger. As the darkness of the jungle surrounds you and tries to get under your skin, we light a fire and sit in its protective glow.
Kaziranga to Umium/Shillong is 255Km/ 7 hours. At sun rise, we set off to lush green forested hills of Meghalaya. It’s a long ride, but a very interesting one, as the road snakes between and over the hills. Short Chai breaks to feel the clean air wash over you and regroup.
Umium/Shillong to Cherrapunji is 86km/3hours. This is short ride. On the way take a detour and a break at Laitlum, with spectacular views of the valley below.
This Circuit is 200km/6hrs. Dawki is a small village where the Dawki river comes down from the hills to the plains. The river water is so clear that one can count the pebbles on the river bed. En-route we will also stop by the cleanest village in Asia (Mawlynnong). This place also has one of many Living root bridges. Living Root bridges are constructed by forming a web of roots from trees on the bank of the river. As the roots grow stronger so does the bridge. These are maintained by subsequent generations of the same family, spanning many centuries.
Cherrapunji is the wettest place on earth. Ironically, when it is not raining, there is a water shortage, due to fantastic natural drainage. Large amounts of flowing water and hills manifest in to spectacular waterfalls. We will spend the day, riding and/or trekking exploring the locales. Or just laze around. It’s a holiday after all.
Cherrapunji-Shillong is 55 Km/2 hrs. Shillong is a town that is perpetually in a celebratory mood. Great day to explore and walk away as couples/buddies to coffee shops, poking around the local bazar or drop by a pub to enjoy some live music.
Shillong-Manas National Park is 231km/5 hrs. This is a high speed exciting road. These twisties will keep newbies as well as experienced rides busy. Reducing radius turns, off camber bends, beautifully banked high speed turns, and road surprises. This section has it all. Today is also the day we will be crossing the mighty Bhramaputra. The Bhramaputra has been such a dominant feature of this land that a keep observes will notice a difference in the type of vegetation on North bank from the South Bank.
Manas National Park is a Elephant reserve that extends in to Bhutan. This is where we cross over in to a new year. Partying hard or sit silently in contemplation. Manas will let you swing to your own rhythm. As the sun rises and clears the fog of 2017, enjoy your hot cup of Assam chai or brewed coffee. This is the day to take it easy or step out to spot elephants.
Manas National Park to Guwahati 160Km/4 hours. Ease back in to civilization and urban reality. Enjoy the luxuries of a modern hotel. Retune the aural frequencies to accept the realities of work life.
